Vintage Vogue 2903

Oh, how I love this dress. It's a 1957 pattern reproduction, and it's right up my alley.

Some Details

There is a bit of strange construction on this dress when it comes to the yoke. There is actually this under-yoke thing where the sleeves attach that I totally wasn't aware of when I began. I think it could make it quite fun if you used a contrasting fabric for the under yoke. This pattern would also be great without the sleeves as an off-the-shoulder number.

You can kind of see the under yoke business in the three-quarter sleeve version.

This beauty also required a whopping SEVEN yards to complete. Can you believe it?! But it's totally worth it for all the funnies of this dress with a petticoat underneath.

  1. Thanks for your blog! I am also in the process of trying to make this dress, and struggling a bit with the yoke and sleeves. Your dress looks gorgeous on you! :)

    1. Hi Bonnie! Thank you so much! I hope you're version is going well. Those sleeves/yoke are a bit tricky. Feel free to email me if you need some help - rosiewednesday@gmail.com. I can take pictures of my dress inside out and try to describe what I did.

  2. I am loving this dress and the material. Now hopefully I can track down a copy of this pattern for myself. I'm even more hopeful that, when I do find it, it will fit my store-bought size 18 chest or at least that I can find someone who can help me make it fit properly. There aren't a lot of dresses out there that I love, but this one I do. :)

    1. Hi Melissa,

It's a reproduction pattern, so you can find it here: http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v2903-products-4894.php?page_id=850

The fabric is even on sale at Joann's online if you want to do an exact copy of mine! http://www.joann.com/fashion-bottomweight-yellow-floral-on-gray-sateen/zprd_11171584a/

    2. I've got a size 18 chest, too, and I cut out the size 22. It's actually a bit TOO big, but we're too crunched for time to alter it further! 20 might do you well, depending on actual measurements!

  3. I really like how it looks with the belt you added! Did you make it yourself, or have it made? We're making these for bridesmaid dresses for a wedding next weekend -- still have to inset the sleeve/yolk things and hem it, though! We have petticoats to wear under them that will be super fun:)

    1. Thank you! I did make the belt myself. Using this pattern for bridesmaid dresses sounds so neat! And also like a lot of work. Happy sewing to you!

  5. I'm thinking of making this pattern up next, so I've been Googling the pattern number, and WOW. I love everything about your dress here. EVERYTHING. The colors, the fit, the petticoat and the little string of pearls... ;) You must feel like a million bucks in this glorious frock.

  6. Lauren, I am making a muslin of this dress right now, in a cheap taffeta, so I can figure out the fit adjustments before I cut it out in an aqua silk dupioni for my wedding. Hopefully this isn't too personal but - did you need to make bust adjustments to the pattern? Was it difficult? I think I will need to do FBA which I am new to, and am definitely glad to be trying it in cheap fabric first....

    1. Hi! It's not too personal at all. And how exciting that you're using this dress for your wedding! I didn't have to to do an FBA on this dress, but I have had to do one and move the bust fullness on another dress I've made. I'd be happy to walk you through it help you identify what you might need, and show you pictures of what I've done. Want to shoot me an email? rosiewednesday@gmail.com

    2. I should add - another dress with princess seams is where I've made those changes. It's different with darts.

    3. I am about to start making this and also need to increase the bust by a couple inches. What was your result? Does the pattern generally run true to the stated size? I'd love to hear how you did it!!

    4. Hi Chele! A couple of inches sounds like a lot! I'm wondering if you've picked the wrong size. It's usually best to select a pattern off of your high bust adjustment (above the fullest part of the bust) and go from there. Want to email me and I can walk you through it?
