I'm super excited about today's video tutorial. I had given up on sewing machine-stitched lapped zippers and switched to doing it by hand after so many failed attempts. When I learned this method in my pattern-making class, I was over the moon!
Here's an image to show you the difference it made in sewing lapped zippers for me. I will give you a high-level overview of the first method in the video, but here's
an example of the "regular" method in more detail.
If you've had a hard time getting a consistent lap with the "regular" method, you'll want to see this! I also think it's a great method for first-timers to learn, too, since it's easier to get it right!
Oh thank goodness, I've been doing it the good way all along. You came across wonderfully on camera, go you!

DeleteWow! I really liked this tutorial. I'm going to give it a go when I get home. I didn't do a lapped zipper in my shift dress cause it would have been my first one and I didn't want to stuff it up. I did make a lapped zipper by accident once when I was making a cushion, but I then couldn't figure out how I'd done it!

DeleteI found my way to your Sewalong via Pattern Review, and have been making S3833 with you, although a few months later. I have never sewn a lapped zipper before, and found your video tutorial exceedingly clear, concise, and instructive. I had to watch it at least 5 times, but I got it, and my zipper is beautiful. Thank you for your wonderful, generous contribution to less experienced sewers than yourself. I plan to keep following your Sewalong, and will post my garment when it is finished.
